Builders Supply has a proud history in Palm Springs. It was established in 1926 by Alvah Hicks at its present location on Sunny Dunes Road, and ever since has been the area's premier hardware store and lumber yard. It is the oldest continuously operated business in Palm Springs, serving not only the Coachella Valley's best builders but also a long list of famous personalities over the years. Alvah Hicks, who arrived in the desert in 1913, was a prominent contractor and developer, who built some of the finest buildings in Palm Springs including the Ingleside Inn and the Cloisters, Liberace's home. Mr. Hicks developed the exclusive Las Palmas and Merito Vista areas and sold 53 acres to actor Charlie Farrell so he could build his famous Racquet Club. Hicks also founded the Palm Springs Water Company which is now the Desert Water Agency.

Alvah's son, Milt Hicks, took over Builders Supply and became known in the desert as "Mr. Golf." He was a founder of Indian Wells Country Club and chairman of the Bob Hope Desert Classic. In 1960, Frank De Benedetti purchased Builders Supply from the Hicks family and it was owned by his daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Frank Purcell, for 40 years until January 2000. It was then purchased by Richard Barnes and Kyle Kincaid and is currently owned and operated by them and Douglas Tyerman, company President. Rick Barnes, CEO, owns several building supply operations in the Seattle, WA area including lumber yards, roof truss plants, a design center and a millwork plant. Kyle Kincaid, an associate of Rick Barnes since 1983, is the company's Chief Financial Officer, and Doug Tyerman, Builders Supply President, has over 30 years experience in the Coachella Valley and Hi-Desert in building material sales.

Builders Supply has always been a vital part of the desert community and has been a major supporter of most of the area's charitable organizations and events for over 80 years. We believe we have a responsibility to continue to help make greater Palm Springs a stronger, safer and better place in which to live.
